While it's probably unnecessary, it's also much better than I expected.

I also agree that many significant films were still being made in black and white during the 60s (I would add personal favorites Night of the Living Dead and The Haunting to your list). Black and white has a magical, timeless quality that just can't be duplicated with color film.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!Barry P.https://www.blogger.com/profile/11251536316431708240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1463671176628323648.post-37749195892663420872013-10-31T21:44:11.311-07:002013-10-31T21:44:11.311-07:00I happened to see Psycho in a theater during one o...I happened to see Psycho in a theater during one of its re-releases in the later '60s. I was young and impressionable then and was very nervous in the shower for quite awhile after. I haven't seen Psycho II - Psycho was an institution by the time it came out and I admit that I was prejudiced against it.

As I understand it, Hitchcock admired Clouzot's Les Diaboliques (b&w,1955) - and some say it was one of his inspirations in the making of Psycho. While it's true that more and more films were being made in color by 1960, b&w films remained popular through the decade (The Apartment, Cape Fear, Days of Wine & Roses, The Hustler, etc.) - especially when it came to dramas and horror/thrillers. I believe Hitchcock made the right decision in filming Psycho in b&w - it emphasized the bleakness of Norman Bates's grim and grisly tale.

Not to overlook Psycho II - I'm curious to see it now and to watch it with an open mind. Thanks for a very interesting post.

The Lady Evehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11963115499930520653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1463671176628323648.post-7091212540053691342013-10-31T14:31:46.967-07:002013-10-31T14:31:46.967-07:00Thanks for visiting Lê! ... and I will certainly c...Thanks for visiting Lê! ... and I will certainly check out your contribution as well.

Perkins is suitably creepy and sympathetic as Norman Bates in Psycho II. It's obvious that he's lived with the stigma of the role for so long, that he knows the character backwards and forwards.Barry P.https://www.blogger.com/profile/11251536316431708240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1463671176628323648.post-47180081655208082752013-10-31T14:29:25.534-07:002013-10-31T14:29:25.534-07:00Thanks Joe! You made a good point about analyzing each piece as a product of its time. When I have the chance, I'll watch the sequel with your post in mind, and also because I love Anthony Perkins.
I bet thousands of people were afraid of getting into the shower after watching Psycho!
Don't forget to read my contribution to the blogathon! :)
Greetings!
Lêhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02419693749682458647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1463671176628323648.post-24309307229036851982013-10-31T06:54:55.046-07:002013-10-31T06:54:55.046-07:00Very well said! Since then, I've seen the original many times and own a DVD copy. The Hitchcock film obviously can't be beat, but after reading your post, I'd be curious to give the sequel another look and see how it holds up for me today and if my memories of it are still accurate.
